Amazon Aurora serverless enhances performance and scaling capabilities

Amazon Aurora Serverless has been upgraded to offer up to 30% improved performance and smarter scaling, making it ideal for applications with unpredictable usage patterns. These enhancements are available in platform version 4 at no additional cost.

Amazon Aurora Serverless, the automated database service that adjusts its capacity to meet varying demands, has recently been upgraded to deliver up to 30% better performance compared to its previous version. This service is designed to scale up to accommodate high-demand workloads and scale down to zero when not needed, offering a cost-effective solution for businesses.

The latest improvements make Aurora Serverless particularly beneficial for applications involving agentic AI, which often experience sudden activity spikes, extended periods of inactivity, and unpredictable usage patterns. The service automatically adjusts its capacity in response to these fluctuating demands, ensuring that users only pay for the resources they actually consume. When the database is not in use, it automatically scales down to zero, helping to reduce costs.

With these enhancements, Aurora Serverless can now handle more demanding workloads. The updated scaling algorithm efficiently manages scenarios where multiple tasks vie for resources, such as busy web applications and API services. These improvements are part of platform version 4 and are available at no extra cost.

All new database clusters, restored databases, and clones will automatically deploy on platform version 4. For those using platform versions 1, 2, or 3, an upgrade to version 4 can be carried out via a pending maintenance action, by stopping and restarting the cluster, or through blue/green deployments. Users can check their cluster’s platform version in the AWS Console under the instance configuration section or through the RDS API using the ServerlessV2PlatformVersion parameter.

Amazon Aurora Serverless offers an on-demand, automatic scaling configuration tailored to Amazon Aurora users. Additional information and guidance on setting up an Aurora Serverless database can be found in the service documentation, with setup achievable in just a few steps through the AWS Management Console.
